Puppy Starter Program

5-week class
Tuesdays, 6:30 pm

Start dates:
• February 14
• March 21

• April 25

For puppies under 5 months old. Prerequisite: Proof of first round of vaccines

This is where it all begins! Forget about “sit, down, stay” – our Puppy Starter Program digs deeper and the results last a lifetime. If you want your puppy to become a well-socialized dog that succeeds in our human world, and learn human words/commands, you must first learn to speak some dog. Your puppy will better understand all you have to teach him/her if you begin by communicating in a manner that he/she already understands.

We’ll teach YOU how to:

  • properly be your puppy’s leader
  • effectively communicate with your him/her
  • help your puppy deal with this demanding human world

Our program focuses on basic foundation behaviors, handling skills, and will help you boost your effectiveness as a trainer.

This class is the prerequisite for ALL future training you’d do with us at OpBarks. Everything we’ll teach will have a natural flow of progress once you and your dog have mastered these foundations of dog training.

Examples of what we will teach you to teach your puppy:

  • how to sit still when being held/handed
  • how to maintain being calm around new people
  • how to stay calm and mannerly around other dogs
  • to look to you for guidance and leadership in EVERY situation rather than making poor decisions

This program meets for 5 weeks but the first class is humans only since most of the work this first week will be for you. Then for classes 2-5, we'll work with you and your puppy to build skills, confidence and set you up with a game plan for a great journey together. Solid work here in these early weeks will pay off more than you know throughout your lives together.

Length: (5) 1-hour classes

Class size: Limited to 6 puppies to allow for a good teacher-to-student ratio

Includes: Digital handbook and support via email for duration of the class

Price: $165

Next Step: B-Dog 1: Focus & Control Fundamentals

Dog Starter Program

5-week class
Thursdays, 6:00 pm

Start dates:
• January 19

• February 23

• March 30

Dog- and people-friendly dogs over 5 months old. Prerequisites: Up-to-date on vaccinations.

Whether your dog is young or old, new to you, or simply new to professional dog training, the beginnings are the same. Even if you missed out on a “puppy class”, don’t fret. It’s never too late get your dog started off on the right paw.  Successful training should always begin with solid communication, and that needs to begin with you learning some dog language. Your dogs will better understand all you have to teach them if you begin by communicating in a manner that they already understand. And this is where it all begins.

Forget about “sit, down, stay” even if your dogs knows these basics–our Dog Starter Program digs deeper and results last a lifetime. Too often we rush into what is commonly known as “basic training” for our dogs. In doing so we skip over some very fundamental learning; not just for our dogs, but also for ourselves.  Sure, we all want our dog to learn some tricks and have fun, but what about teaching our dogs to be calm, to relax and settle, to focus on you, to learn to follow your lead? That’s where we start, because foundations are essential to preventing bad habits and teaching our dogs how to be safe and secure in our human world.

We’ll teach YOU how to:

  • properly be your dog’s leader
  • effectively communicate with your him/her
  • help your dog deal with this demanding human world

Our program focuses on basic foundation behaviors, handling skills, and will help you boost your effectiveness as a trainer.

4-week practice sessions
Thursdays, 7:00 pm

Start date:
• March 2

Dog- and people-friendly dogs over 5 months old. Prerequisites: Up-to-date on vaccinations. Completion of the OpBarks' Puppy or Dog Starter Program.

In the Starter Program you learned to speak some dog and started to build a good connection with your canine companion. Here in B-Dog 1, it’s time to build on those foundations and enhance your training skills.

While “sit” & “down” will play their parts, they are not the main attractions. In this class, we teach dogs the attention, focus and self-control that dogs need to have in order to be successful in our world.

Examples of what we’ll cover:

  • How to practice impulse control
  • Proper greeting manners at home
  • How to deal with a dog who jumps
  • How to improve your dog’s leash walking
  • How to increase your dog’s responsiveness to you
  • How to get your dog to ignore distractions

At week 4 of this class, we’ll assess your skills. If you pass with flying colors, you are approved to go on to intermediate practice sessions in B-Dog 2: Making it Stick. If there is more work to do, then come back for another round of B-Dog 1—use the (4) classes as practice sessions to keep working on the foundations needed for focus and control.

Length: (4) 1-hour classes

Class size: Limited to 6 dogs to allow for a good teacher-to-student ratio

Includes: Digital handbook and support via email for duration of the class

Price: $135

B-Dog 2: Making it Stick

4-week practice sessions
Thursdays, 7:00 pm

Start dates:

• January 19

• April 6

Dog- and people-friendly dogs over 5 months old. Prerequisites: Up-to-date on vaccinations. Completion of B-Dog 1: Focus and Control Fundamentals.

Now that you and your dog have proven you have some serious talent, let’s put it to work and start to turn those good skills into a really good dog!

In our previous classes we have laid the groundwork for a strong canine companionship and now it’s time to put what you’ve learned to the test. Building off your current skill set we’ll help you to make things stick for the long haul.

In B-Dog 2 we get more into the subtleties of manners with the goal of having good habits become automatic, natural reflexes. We do this by upping the ante and focusing on real-word situations of greater intensity than previously practiced as well as teaching new skills. We also begin to fade out any food rewards so you and your dog are less dependent on such a basic “give & take” structure.

Examples of what we’ll teach and practice:

  • How to remain calm around strong distractions
  • Enhanced focus on you the owner
  • How to hold positions and chill (developing a strong “stay”)
  • How to have your dog come when called
  • “Drop it”
  • Advanced leash walking skills

Length: (4) 1-hour classes

Class size: Limited to 6 dogs to allow for a good teacher-to-student ratio

Includes: Digital handbook and support via email for duration of the class

Price: $135

Next Step: At week 4 of class, we'll assess your dog's intermediate skills and if they are looking good, you'll be approved for B-Dog 3: Advanced Maneuvers. If there is more work to do, then come back for a round of B-Dog 2 practice sessions to keep working on the skills needed to make it stick.

Super Sniffer

4-week class
Thursdays, 8:00 pm

Start date:

• March 3

For friendly dogs over 5 months who have completed B-Dog 1: Focus and Control or are pre-approved by our staff.

You probably know that a dog's nose is very powerful and is invaluable in search and rescue and police work. Canine nose work has also become a competitive dog sport. Our version, Super Sniffer, is just for fun but is a great introduction to scent work. We turn your dog's natural desire to hunt and forage into an enjoyable game and mental workout by teaching your dog to use their nose to search for hidden items. The game you learn in class can also be played at home or anywhere—often with things you have laying around the house. As dog sports go, this one isn't very physical but it's a great way to exercise your dog's brain and just have a good time with your pup.
